ARCHIMEDE at Siracusa

Experience exhibition

Siracusa, piazza del Duomo. A few steps away from the Church of Santa Lucia alla Badia, where up to a few months ago Caravaggio’s Burial of Saint Lucy could be seen (despite some difficulties caused by a less than perfect display), we find the Galleria Civica Montevergini which offers, until December, a fascinating opportunity to get to know one of the most ingenious figures of human history.
Archimedes at Siracusa  greets the public with an intriguing book & art shop filled with publications for adults and children alike and with a wealth of original objects made by companies, artisans and social cooperatives from Siracusa.

The Experience exhibition begins in a large area equipped with 16 video projectors for a 360 degrees multimedia vision which takes the visitor on a trip through time to “dive” into the city in which Archimedes lived. A spectacular and philologically accurate reconstruction shows some of the most important buildings (from Castello Eurialo to the Greek Theater and the Temple of Athena) which made Siracusa one of the main centers of the Mediterranean from both the artistic and cultural point of view. A series of animations made with students from the INDA academy bring to life the ancient people of Siracusa and the great scientist.
From an idea of the Galileo Museum of Florence, Archimedes at Siracusa, is curated by Giovanni di Pasquale with the scientific consultancy of Giuseppe Voza and Cettina Pipitone Voza. It has an evocative narration which in Italian is read by Massimo Popolizio, but it is also available in 4 languages and allows visitors to surround themselves with Siracusa in the third century B.C.

The trail around the exhibition continues with an elaborate in-depth analysis of his theories, where visitors can interact with more than 20 functioning models of the machines attributed to Archimedes: from the hydraulic to the endless screw, from the burning mirrors to the machines used to lift heavy cargo. This series of working models illustrates the most important aspects of the studies carried out by the great scientist and the extraordinary objectives achieved on the practical level. Each exhibit is accompanied by informative, explanatory and interactive videos, with an entire room dedicated especially to children.
The museum is open from 10.00 to 14.00 from Tuesday to Friday and from 10.00 to 14.00 and 17.00 to 20.00 on Saturday and Sunday. The museum is closed on Monday.
