When Theatre is inclusion

A successful collaboration between the Fondazione Inda and Association Sicilia Turismo per Tutti link has allowed theatre to tear down barriers: on the 17th of August 2021 a special audience could watch the performance of Le Nuvole by Aristophanes, under the direction of Antonio Calenda, with simultaneous translation in Sign Language. More than thirty people with communication disabilities were present at the comedy, which was performed throughout the month of August at the Greek Theatre of Siracusa. Thanks to the interpreters Salvina Magnano and Viviana Aprile, the public in its entirety took part in a truly inclusive cultural project, and shared the experience of ancient theatre with those who would normally be limited by physical constrictions. The “brechtian and surreal” comedy, as imagined by the director, was performed for a very demanding public, giving them the emotions hidden behind the witty language, jokes and the sometimes bitter reflections on the true sense of human existence.

"The Theatre of Siracusa has confirmed itself as being inclusive, adding value to the sensitivity which has always characterised the organisation of the classical plays."

The Theatre of Siracusa, for the eighth consecutive year, has confirmed itself as the only stone theatre accessible to everyone, adding value to the sensitivity which has always characterised the organisation of the classical plays.
It could be defined a “cultural miracle”, born of the various contributions offered by INDA, the Association “Amici di Inda”, the aforementioned Association SiciliaTurismo per Tutti and the Fidapa, section of Siracusa, who together were able to create an occasion of great significance, especially considering the Covid restrictions in place.
